Membership Covenant

The following questions are not meant to create a "standard" you have to meet to be a member, but rather to help facilitate our ongoing care and discipleship for you as your pastors as you join Citizens Church.

Membership Commitment #1

I commit to holding to the Citizens Church Confessional Statement and living in unity regarding the distinctive beliefs and open beliefs (1 Corinthians 15:1-11).

Apostles Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell. On the third day, He rose again from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

As a reminder, our theological distinctives are:

1. We have a reformed soteriology.

We locate ourselves within the Reformed Tradition. Theologically this means our doctrine is rooted in the “five solas” of the Protestant Reformation (Scripture alone, faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone, and God’s glory alone) and shaped by the confessions of Reformed churches (Westminster, London Baptist, etc.) Our confessional statement is, in many ways, a modern adaptation of these historical documents.

2. We hold a continuationist view of the Holy Spirit

We affirm, desire, and practice the continued presence and activity of the Holy Spirit in the church, including through miraculous gifts. We believe the practice of the gifts is meant to be orderly and edifying to the body. We believe every Christian is indwelt with the Holy Spirit fully and immediately upon conversion to faith in Christ.

3. We live out a warm complementarianism

We affirm that men and women are unequivocally equal in essence, dignity, and value. We also affirm that God created humans male and female to be distinct and mutually dependent. We seek to honor both of these convictions while acknowledging the longstanding difficulties and cultural assumptions that often inform church belief and practice. We believe that the home and the church (a spiritual household) will be healthiest when men and women are mutually dependent in their distinctiveness.

4. We baptize believers by immersion

We affirm baptism as the external sign of entrance into God’s covenant community. The best practices of baptism honor the activity of God, the church, and the person receiving baptism. We recognize the diversity of practice on this issue throughout church history and seek to avoid division over this issue.

Membership Commitment #2

I commit to living out the spiritual practices of scripture, prayer, hospitality, fasting, and sabbath on a regular basis for my ongoing, patient, and slow spiritual formation and discipleship (Galatians 5:16).

Going to the Spirit-inspired Words of God as our wisdom and strength for life. This can be lectio divina, study, a bible reading plan, or some other form of engaging with God's Word. Our hope and prayer is that 100% of our members would grow over time to engage with God's Word on a regular basis.

Prayer is conversing with God about what we are doing together. This can be through writing prayers, prayer walks, praying through the Bible, or other forms of individual prayers. Our hope and prayer is that 100% of our members would grow to engage with God in prayer on a regular basis.

Fasting is the intentional abstaining from food and all non-water drink for a specific period of time for spiritual purposes. Our hope and prayer is that 100% of our members would grow to practice fasting on a regular basis.

A Sabbath in the Scriptures is an intentional 24-hour period of stopping work to delight in God, His people, and His gifts. Our hope and prayer is that 100% of our members would grow to practice a sabbath on a regular basis.

Membership Commitment #3

I commit to regular presence and participation in this church family, seeking to invest in those around me, building up one another more and more into maturity in Jesus (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Membership Commitment #4

I commit to unity among the membership of Citizens Church through apologizing, forgiving, pursuing timely reconciliation and creating an environment where gossip is not tolerated from myself or others (Hebrews 12:14, Titus 3:10-11).

Membership Commitment #5

I commit to regular financial giving toward the mission of Citizens Church with a glad, sacrificial, and generous heart (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, 1 Timothy 5:17).

Membership Commitment #6

I commit to humbly bringing myself under the authority and direction of the pastors of Citizens Church, allowing them to lead, encourage, disciple, and confront me as those who are called to shepherd me and give an account for my soul (Hebrews 13:17, 1 Timothy 5:17-19).

Membership Commitment #7

I commit to living on mission with those around me through hospitality, service, and evangelism, sharing the gospel often and with courage (Matthew 28:18-20).

Membership Commitment #8

I commit to having an in-person conversation with a pastor before withdrawing my membership at Citizens Church for whatever reason, and will seek to join another gospel-preaching church as soon as possible (Romans 12:18).

Pastor Commitments

The pastors of Citizens Church commit, by God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, to live out these six commitments to our church family:

1. We commit to appoint future pastors and deacons according to the criteria assigned to them in the Scriptures.

2. We commit to prayerfully seek God’s will for our church family and steward our resources to the best of our ability based on the leading of the Spirit and the Scriptures.

3. We commit to care for the members of Citizens and seek their growth in grace, truth, and love, equipping them for the work of ministry.

4. We commit to provide teaching and counsel from the whole of Scripture and to guard against false teaching and teachers.

5. We commit to lovingly exercise discipline when necessary, for the glory of God, the good of the one disciplined, and the health of the church as a whole.

6. We commit to set an example and join members in fulfilling the obligations of church membership stated below.

Next Steps

The final step in membership is to meet with a Citizens pastor to share your story, ask any questions you might have, and sign the membership commitments.
